Walter was killed in action from shrapnel to his back near Mayenne in France on August 6, 1944 at 4 p.m.. Walter was first buried in the U.S. Military Cemetery #1, Marigny, France, Plot C, Row 10, Grave 183 on August 8,1944. Walter was later moved and reburied at Plot I Row 10 Grave 10 at the Brittany American Cemetery by March 30,1949.
When Walter died he had some personal property that was sent back to Leslie Karnese Rogers after being coordinated through many back and forth letters. With him he had 4 cotton undershirts, 2 cotton drawers, 6 pairs of socks, 1 bath towel, 1 garrison cap, 1 wool knit cap, 1 pair of wool gloves, 2 containers of cigarettes, 1 mackinaw coat, 1 pair of green trousers, 1 pair of wool trousers, 1 waist belt, 2 wool drawers, 1 wool undershirt, 1 face towel, toilet articles, and stationary.

Walter's reburial at Plot I Row 10 Grave 10 at the Brittany American Cemetery would be his final resting place. The flag pictured above was sent back to his family and is still held dear to his daughter, Ann Rogers Reynolds.
